Another question came to me. I'm learning lots about articulation and phrasing in my lessons. Does articulation and phrasing affect tone color...or are these separate aspects of playing?

I guess I'm just a typical analytical guy....I need to break everything down to it;s constituent nuts and bolts and analyze it to death....

Dan,
I think it's an issue of semantics. If you think about it, a note played staccato is going to have a different "tone color" than the same note played with a tenuto marking. But that tenuto marking can be given all sorts of different colors and nuances.
Were you playing on a synthesizer which is on a setting that is unable to make differences in tonal color, the effects of articulation might very well lead the listener to hear different tone colors. So, I guess...my position would be that, though we talk about articulation and tone as two different properties, articulation cannot help but effect the tone. Good question, Dan! (Mediocre response, Eric!)

Yet still an excellent point, Eric. I'm an organist and color is a very important part of the picture - through articulation when one is playing a passage on the same stops (vs. changing color by pulling a different stop.) The space in time before a note is the most important thing one controls, and it can make or break a performance.
