Learning by Creating: Interactive Projects in Classical Improvising and Composing

By Mary Gae George and James Drew

Program Description

Learning by Creating is a self-contained, interactive, step-by-step computer study program for music students to use at home in their daily practice.

This powerful teaching tool immediately involves the student in the vast subject of music in clear, easy steps that deal with the CREATING of rhythm, form, and colour.

The program directly engages the student in the participatory process of DOING, which allows the student to arrive at the necessary “theoretical” concepts by way of discovery, experimentation, and exploration of the program’s innovative musical MATERIALS and ACTIVITIES.

The program is unique in that it does not require any lesson time – the student works actively at home with the program and brings the teacher the printed results.

Program Objectives

The objectives of Learning by Creating are twofold:

1. To involve students of any age and of all instruments including voice directly in learning HOW MUSIC WORKS, thus making the language of music something the student can understand and use as a dramatic vehicle of personal expression.

2. To build educated and discerning audiences for the artists and composers of America, thus making a contribution to the revitalization of our national culture.

Program Format

Learning by Creating is presented in several large Projects:

Melody

Melody Supported by Harmony

The Harmonic “Family Circle”

Creating Musical Form

Stylistic Periods

Each Project is divided into several Lessons that include exciting Experiments to develop the student’s awareness, interest, and confidence. For example, the Lessons in Project 1 on Melody include:

Lesson 1: Melodic Goal

Lesson 2: Tonal Center

Lesson 3: Meter

Lesson 4: Directed Motion

Lesson 5: Creating Directed Motion

Lesson 6: Theme and Variation

Lesson 7: Reconstructing Melody

Each Lesson contains notated musical examples that the student can hear and perform. Then the student completes melodies, first adding one or two notes, then entire phrases. After these experiments, the student is ready to improvise and compose his or her own melodies.

The Lessons also contain an:

Interactive Glossary

Assignment (included suggested listening)

Self-grading quiz on information and ear training.

Ways to Use the Program

An essential adjunct for the beginning student:

Learning by Creating is designed to be used at home by the music student from the very beginning of his or her study program. It thus serves as an assistant to the teacher, providing the student daily, step-by-step guidance in the MAKING of musical decisions and the exciting creation of original music. Because there is nothing repetitious in the activities, Jack and Jill will WANT to practice!

An innovative review for transfer students:

Learning by Creating is ideal for “transfer students” who have more technical skill than musical understanding. By improvising and composing, the student can review essentials missed the first time around, and in making his or her own music, the student does not feel demoted. Instead, they find they have been promoted to a higher level of involvement in music.

A thoroughly organized program for special events like summer camps:

Learning by Creating can also serve as a broad platform for summer camp or off-track special classes (for students in year-round school). The process of creating one’s own musical ideas paves the way to greater understanding and appreciation of music from all periods, including the neglected masterworks of the 20th century. Projects in listening can be dovetailed with projects in improvising and composing, with all the supportive give-and-take possible between groups of students in the camp or class situation.

A self-contained complete music curriculum for public, private, and home schools, as well as independent studios:

Learning by Creating is an authentically COMPLETE music curriculum that is an essential interactive educational source, even for students who do not study privately.
